Sierra
Nevada Rocks - Back To Front: The Coastline of the
Mornington Peninsula
Location:
Mornington Peninsula
Date
Released: February 2005
Shortly after midnight on the 8th
of May 1900, the 'Sierra Nevada',
an English cargo ship with a crew
of 28, was swept on to the rocks
here in stormy conditions.
23 of the crew were killed in the
disaster, and the following
morning the beach was littered
with debris and was crowded with
onlookers, helpers and
looters. Infact the looting
became such a problem, that the
military had to intervene.
The remains of the government
protected shipwreck now lie in the
water just off the edge of the
rock platform which is very
difficult for divers. There
is a memorial gravestone in the
Sorrento cemetery where the ships
captain and ten crew were buried.
